WHY IS GOOD NUTRITION IMPORTANT IN HIV/AIDS?

Proper nutrition is vital to good health for persons living with HIV. Early nutrition intervention is important to preserve lean body mass, prevent infections, improve mental attitude, and enhance the response to medications and other therapies.

When nutritional needs are met, clients are more likely to feel healthy, making them better able to tolerate medications and other treatment regimens. Ultimately, nutrition therapy helps to enhance the quality and length of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

IS NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING AVAILABLE FOR ALL CLIENTS?

Nutrition counseling and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) are provided to all clients of Heartland CARES, Inc. by a Registered Dietitian (RD). Nutritional counseling based on the clinical, functional and behavioral needs of each client, and is designed to assist clients in meeting individual nutritional goals. Nutritional protocols for our clinic are based on the American Dietetic Association (ADA) Medical Nutrition Therapy protocols for HIV/AIDS care (updated 2002).

By working with the Dietitian, clients can learn:

How to manage symptoms and medication side effects through proper nutrition
Why good nutrition is important and how nutrients interact in the body
How to keep food and water safe for consumption

What to eat to maintain muscle and weight

Why vitamin supplements are important
Why exercise is important
How to improve blood lipid levels (cholesterol, triglycerides) through good nutrition
AND MUCH MORE!

WHAT IS A REGISTERED DIETITIAN?

A Registered Dietitian, or "RD" for short, is a professional with education in foods and nutrition. The RD is the nutrition expert, and is the best person to ask about any nutritional questions. An RD must:

Earn a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or a related field
Complete an experiential internship
Pass a national credentialing examination

Maintain at least 15 hours of continuing education every year

IS THE DIETITIAN AVAILABLE ON-SITE?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) has always been part of our care team. The role of the RD in clinical care continues to expand as the number of clients we serve increases. The RD is available for individual and group education, and is generally at the clinic during normal clinic hours (8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday).
