Department of Community Development

The Heartland CARES, Inc. Department of Community Development was established in 2003. Our goals are to increase HIV/AIDS awareness throughout the community, to improve community relations and establish linkages that are beneficial to many community agencies, and to recruit and train volunteers to help further the mission of Heartland CARES, Inc.

To accomplish these goals, we offer workshops about HIV/AIDS ("HIV 101"), training in HIV pre- and post-test counseling, and a variety of other services. We also offer group workshops to enhance self-esteem and assertiveness skills, as persons who lack self-esteem and assertiveness skills are more likely to participate in activities that place them at risk for HIV transmission and a variety of other problems (such as substance abuse and transmission of other infectious diseases). Workshops are available for groups of all ages.

The Community Development department at Heartland CARES, Inc. has provided programming for:

The Paducah Rape Crisis Center
Local Parish Nurses' Association
NECCO (Foster Parenting Agency)
Paducah Cooperative Ministries
McCracken County Juvenile Detention Center
Youth groups at Westminster Presbyterian Church
Elementary and middle schools throughout the region
