Adherence Education/Counseling
Adherence is defined as the ability of clients to comply with prescribed treatment regimens, including Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) as well as other therapies such as mental health therapy, medical nutrition therapy, physical therapy, etc.
Repeatedly, studies have shown that adherence rates of 95% are needed to help reduce drug resistance seen with HIV medications. Recommended drug regimens can include several drugs usually required to be taken twice a day. With new medications the number of pills and frequency of dosing has been reduced but treatment is still a long term commitment.
Adherence counseling helps clients develop strategies to take medications as prescribed with regard to the correct dosing schedule, special dietary and other requirements.
Education is the foundation for adherence counseling. Clients need information about treatment options so they can make informed decisions in collaboration with their healthcare providers. Adherence is enhanced by regular counseling and education from an adherence specialist. Participation in support groups and mentoring/buddy programs has also been shown to increase adherence to medications and other treatment regimens.
Adherence counseling and education is offered to all Heartland CARES, Inc. clients on a regular basis. The degree of counseling a client receives is based upon their individual adherence issues and they are, then, provided with individualized counseling and treatment based on a current adherence assessment.
